Curis Recruitment is proud to be working with a well-established Aboriginal Medical Service in regional Queensland to help them find a permanent Cancer Support Officer.

Working alongside a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and their families throughout the cancer care journey - from prevention and early diagnosis through to treatment, survivorship and end-of-life care.

You will provide culturally safe, person-centred care coordination, advocacy, education and support while working closely with clients, families and health professionals to improve access to cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and holistic support.

Job details:
  • $100,000 – $115,000 per year + superannuation, dependent on experience and negotiable

About the role
Reporting to the Clinical Programs Manager, you will provide culturally safe and person-centred cancer care coordination and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and their families.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Develop and deliver culturally appropriate cancer screening and health promotion activities
  • Deliver community education sessions focused on cancer prevention, lifestyle changes, cancer signs and symptoms, early detection and timely GP follow-up
  • Encourage and increase participation in cancer screening
  • Accompany community members to cancer screening appointments, providing advocacy, education and emotional support
  • Arrange and accompany clients to diagnostic testing appointments where required
  • Provide culturally appropriate support and continuity of care throughout the diagnostic process
  • Develop personalised care plans for community members diagnosed with cancer
  • Coordinate care in partnership with clients, families, Cancer Support Officers and relevant healthcare professionals
  • Provide ongoing referrals to appropriate wraparound services to ensure holistic support
  • Develop auditing and reporting processes to identify clients requiring follow-up screening and cancer care services
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records and contribute to data collection and reporting
  • Research and contribute to the development of innovative and culturally appropriate cancer care models
  • Ensure applicable Medicare items and claiming requirements are appropriately managed
  • Provide supervision, education and mentoring to Health Promotion Officers – Cancer Care
  • Work collaboratively with the broader multidisciplinary team to support quality improvement and continuity of care.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Current Registered Nurse registration with AHPRA
  • Graduate Certificate or higher in a cancer-related field, or currently studying towards one, OR at least 5 years' experience in cancer care
  • Current First Aid and/or CPR certification
  • Current Queensland C Class Open Driver Licence
  • Current Drivers Authorisation
  • Strong understanding of cancer prevention, screening, treatment and supportive care principles
  • Experience developing and delivering culturally appropriate health promotion and personalised care plans
  • Excellent interpersonal, advocacy and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Resilience, empathy and an understanding of the emotional demands associated with cancer care
